Cellulite is a common condition resulting from uneven deposits of fat underneath the skin's top layer. Largely dependent on the behaviour and composition of adipocytes (fat cells) and the connective tissue that holds them in place, it is characterized by a dimpled or "orange-peel" appearance. Cellulite occurs typically around the buttocks, thigh and hip area and can affect anyone regardless of weight, race or age. It is more common in women than in men (typically, men have a different fat distribution, thicker skin and stronger connective tissue around the fat cells).
Cellulite is a genetic condition, although there are many environmental, hormonal and behavioural factors that may contribute to it's development, including poor lympatic drainage, pregnancy, aging, lack of exercise, obesity, diets high in processed foods and poor blood circulation. Although it is a perfectly normal and harmless condition, cellulite is a cosmetic concern to many people.
