Fibromyalgia or FMS (Fibromyalgia Syndrome) is a medically unexplained condition characterized by widespread pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons, as well as fatigue and multiple tender points (heightened sensitivity to pressure). Other symptoms may include sleep disturbance, debilitating fatigue, joint stifness, bowel and bladder abnormalities, numbness and tingling, diffuculty swallowing, sensitivity to light and/or temperature, as well as cognitive dysfunction, mood changes and psychiatric disorders. Women are more likely to develop the disorder than men, and the risk increases with age.  Symptoms often begin after an emotional or physical trauma, although in many cases there appears to be no triggering event.
